The Blue Cheese Guide | #MoldyCheeseDay

October 9th is National Moldy Cheese Day! We wouldn’t normally advise you to snack on anything moldy — but blue cheese is the only exception! Believe it or not, blue cheese is moldy on goal. Cheese manufacturers introduce edible mold called Penicillium to the cheese by putting it in using a needle. Blue cheese needs oxygen to grow, so the piercing allows air in while the cheese ages. The injected blue/green mould afterward creates veins while it ages, providing blue cheese the look we recognize. Since mold is supposed to be present, we realize it may be tough to differentiate when blue cheese is okay to consume or not. So here are a few tips on the best way to store and use blue cheese, in addition to tips to know when to throw this out delectable cheese.

Storing Blue Cheese:

Blue Cheese desires oxygen due to the organisms residing on the surface. The best way to store blue cheese when allowing oxygen would be to wrap it in parchment or wax paper. Then, loosely wrap it in plastic wrap and of course, store in the refrigerator. When stored correctly, blue cheese is safe to eat for 3-4 weeks.

How To Know When Blue Cheese Has Gone Bad:

If the white region of the cheese has turned into a different colour including pink, yellow or brown then the cheese is not safe to eat. Be sure to check if the cheese is fuzzy, or slimy at all as well. Either way, it isn’t safe to eat.
