Christmas Crafting: DIY Felt Christmas Lights Garland

Needle felting is our latest obsession. Not only is it enjoyable, but simple too, requiring little in terms of equipment or training. With the holidays right around the corner, we chose to create a felt Christmas lights garland that’s perfect as a tree decoration, or for adding a bit of colour to a mantelpiece, a bar cart, and much more.

The quick take on felting is the fibers of wool actually have scales. If you poke at it using a barbed needle, then you cause the scales to hook on to each other and become entangled. The more you work the wool, the denser it’s, letting you shape the wool simply by poking it repeatedly.

Here’s what you will need:

  • Dyed wool in Many Different colours
  • Felting needle
  • Foam plank
  • Sewing needle and heavy thread

First, roll the wool roughly into shape.

Using the needle, start to poke the wool in the loose end to secure it to the body.

Continue to operate the wool until the body starts to resemble a Christmas light bulb.

Then create the base of the bulb in the same way with just a bit of gray wool.

Attach the base to the bulb using the exact same technique of poking fibers till they”hook” on.

When finished, string your lighting bulbs together with a needle and a few heavy thread.
